After a harrowing border crossing from Mexico, we finally arrived in Belize City and headed straight for the water taxi to Caye Caulker, a small island off the coast. This would be our base for exploring the barrier reef and other islands in the area.
Here is a suggested 3 day itinerary for staying on the island…
Day 1: The sun will be shining bright in the blue sky. Take a water taxi from Belize City to Caye Caulker. Once on the island find your accommodation. Take a tour of the rustic beach shack, ignore the wood rot and insects and pay the manager for 3 nights. Take a nap in the hammock. After napping, proceed to find food and look for a snorkelling tour. Return to cabin, watch a movie and continue to catch up on sleep.
Day 2: It’s overcast and the threat of rain imminent, which doesn’t matter because you now have Justin’s flu and feel like you've been punched in the face by Mike Tyson. Reluctantly leave bed in search for sustenance. Order lobster even though it’s BZD $20 and your taste buds have vacated your mouth. Return to accommodation and watch movies. Send partner to chemist later that afternoon for cold & flu tablets. On return, take the cocktail of drugs he has and go back to sleep.
Day 3: It’s overcast – again. Press snooze and go back to sleep.
Day 4: It actually decided to rain finally! Pay manager for a further two nights – you’re determined to see sunshine! Walk to the other side of the island for a look. Stop for lunch and then return to bed for a nap.
Day 5: Holy shit! Belizeans don’t get that beautiful bronze colour on a tanning bed! The sun is out! Jump on the bed with excitement to wake sleeping partner and head straight to the tur desk to book snorkelling. Eat breakfast and board the boat bound for Shark & Stingray Alley, South Channel & Swash (BZD $60-70 per person). Return to Caye Caulker and get lunch. Return to beach cabin and lounge in hammock.
Day 6: The clouds are back. You find out some friends you made in Mexico have arrived so you pay for another night and meet them for dinner. Proceed to drink a bottle of rum and talk shit.
Day 7: Wake up with gastro. Decide to stay on the island one more night. Manager refuses to take money – 7th night free! You’re winning. The boys go out fishing and come home empty handed after drinking 2 bottles of rum. You start to feel better and decide to pack, there is no way you are spending another day on the island.
Day 8: Head to Starbucks for a cuppa and then over to the water taxi to buy tickets for the 10.30am boat. Find out the boat left at 10am. Pay extra money to catch the express boat and wave goodbye to Caye Caulker!!
